What do the Higgs-boson and the benefits of the UK’s membership of the EU have in common?
1 Both are elusive; neither can actually be seen.
2 Looking for them has already cost £billions.
3 The searches for both are entirely paid for by West European taxpayers.
4 The searchers are expensive people, who confidently expect their searches to set them up for life.
5 Every few years or so when the newspapers get restless about the cost and purpose, officials announce that the latest defining experiment or clinching deal will reveal all – but just in case it doesn’t, caveats are entered to the effect that more money may (i.e. certainly will) be needed.
